The present invention is intended to provide an effective and cost-effective dehulling method for sunflower seeds and other oil-bearing seeds, in particular with particularly hard husks. The invention is based on the recognition that, in addition to a suitable speed of the bulk material, a suitable pressure build-up in the bulk material can be achieved by subjecting it to additional turbulent movement.

In the present invention, this additional turbulence is produced by an angular adjustment of the individual spaced bars of the agitator, as shown in FIG. 3. This angular adjustment causes the impact surface of the agitator bars to be obliquely aligned with respect to the direction of seed conveyance. The consequence of this is that the agitator bars strike over or sweep the bulk material on both sides of this edge, without crushing it.

The resulting pulverization of the bulk material results in an increase in friction between the hull and the husk, while at the same time the impact force is diminished. The result is a substantially improved dehulling of the seeds, without damaging or losing any of the oil in the kernels. In addition, the oblique orientation of the impact surface reduces the wear on the agitator bars significantly and increases the service life thereof. In a series of tests, the effect of the oblique orientation of the impact surfaces was examined at two different moisture contents (12 and 14 %), and for two cylinder speeds (75.0 and 90 rpm). During these trials it was also found that the higher the cylinder speed, the more effective the decortication. The optimum value was reached for the moisture content of approximately 14 %. In this case, the dehulling efficiency was 94.5 %. Compared with manual decortication this is an excellent value.
